Miz Korona

Artist PhotoMiz Korona, born Paula Smiley, is a performing artist, photographer, and activist hailing from Detroit, MI. She was groomed for a life of creative expression early on by her mother and biological father, founding member of the 1970’s r&b group The Floaters. Watching him would instill the importance of confidence and showmanship in her. Korona eventually would discover her gift as a lyricist and storyteller through close mentorship with local producers and earned experiences in cyphers across state. From the stages of St. Andrew’s Hall, Hip Hop Shop to the Lush Lounge, these venues were pivotal to the developing folklore around the Detroit Hip-Hop community and the promising futures it would create for many of her hometowns beloved artists.

One such artist is Marshall “Eminem” Mathers II whose superstardom would grant him the opportunity to bring production of a feature film inspired by his life story to his hometown. Miz Korona is counted among an impressive list of now independent superstars from Detroit to appear in the film 8 Mile but stands out against her peers in the iconic “lunch-truck” scene. With her name attached to an Oscar-winning film which also cemented her status as an emerging artist in hip-hop, Miz Korona capitalized on her hard- earned reputation and well-deserved acclaim as a lyricist to secure opening performances for national touring acts including Scarface and Run DMC.

Miz Korona has released several independent albums in the time since, as well as often appearing alongside creative peers for collaborations as her band The Korona Effect. She’s performed during international festivals, tours, and art exhibitions like 2017 DIA Exhibit D-Cyphered: Portraits by Jenny Risher. Her growth as an artist has extended to the mediums of photography with her business Trigger Finger Visuals where she is the principal photographer, fashion and production under the moniker GLDN GRL PRDXN. Miz Korona uses these extensions of herself to create music that is spiritually conscious while still pleasing listeners with lyrics that are hard-hitting, timely, and timeless. More recently she toured India with the Yes Academy as a member of the teaching artists group The Invisible’s.

Khary Kimani Turner

Khary Kimani Turner is a legend among Detroit artists and activists. A dope emcee with a servant’s sensibilities, he has a Grammy and five Detroit Music Awards to his credit. He also helps Detroit youth access and graduate from universities through his community work.

The hip-hop artist, writer and executive has influenced the creation of classic American albums like Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death, and the Broadway smash Hamilton. He also created two critically acclaimed Detroit albums with his band, Black Bottom Collective, of whom American Music veteran Carl “DJ Invisible” Hollier,” is a founding member, while chronicling the rise of Detroit hip-hop for magazines like Metro Times, XXL and The Source.

Khary toured India extensively in 2022, with American Voices, as a member of DJ Invisible-led collective The Invisibles. Other members included Richard “Richie Robot” Steighner, Paula “Miz Korona” Smiley and Hans Pierre Abellard. The group was among the first Americans to tour the country after it reopened from the pandemic-related shutdown. They were received incredibly well, and were seen and celebrated by more than 300 million people.

For Khary, community involvement and creativity are compliments. Without one, the other cannot exist. His successful combination of these pursuits for more than 25 years positions him to be an asset to American Voices.

Khary lives in Detroit, where he is recording new music with his wife Tunesia, also a founding member of Black Bottom Collective, and his son.
