Biography

Najeeb Sabour is a New Orleans-born, Texas-raised, “Southern” American, cellist, and singer-songwriter. Najeeb combines his education in classical and contemporary music along with his cultural experiences to shape his eclectic style of composing music. Pulled from a diverse background of communities and molded into his own style of performing and teaching, Najeeb navigates the audience through a unique journey of modern storytelling.

Najeeb began playing the cello at age 9 (30 years), and credits representation as a huge factor in his motivation. “I remember witnessing lots of underprivileged kids, like myself getting the opportunity to escape the current environment and play music all around the country. I was immediately drawn to that energy.” Through the will of a dream, Najeeb was able to receive a scholarship providing free lessons for people of color and studied with the principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Having a path out of a challenging environment, Najeeb received scholarships to the Boston Tanglewood Institute and the Aspen Music Festival and went on to achieve first prize at the Dallas All-City Competition and the Dallas Symphonic Competition, debuting as a soloist with the Dallas City Orchestra.

Having a unique childhood mixed with many different cultures, Najeeb went on to study classical music at The Boston Conservatory and later contemporary and pop music at the Berklee School of Music. After school, Najeeb moved to the Czech Republic and Spain, to teach English as a second language and toured with the lateBritish pop band, Capture the Flag.

Najeeb also has a passion for culture, traveling and meeting new people, finding new vegan recipes to make, and going on outdoor adventures with his dog “Zulu.” Najeeb is active in his community and is a strong advocate in the power of creativity and enjoys teaching others how to use creativity to overcome adversity. “Teach a child how to be creative and he might just change the world.“
