Biography

Few independent bands have had a career as varied and unpredictable as the indie pop sextet Sub-Radio. Founded in Washington DC by a group of childhood friends, the band built a following in their hometown of Washington, D.C. on the strength of ecstatic live shows and a stream of releases. The band’s first release, 2016’s Same Train // Different Station, was recorded as the guys finished college, blending the pop-punk they grew up on with the indie-pop stylings of WALK THE MOON and The 1975.

In 2017, Sub-Radio released a single per month from April to September, coinciding with a regional tour and an appearance at the Firefly Music Festival. Their two raucous sets at the festival exposed them to a wider audience, and the band’s next EP Headfirst was their best-performing release yet, including the popular beachy single “Flashback,” which has amassed 3 million streams across all platforms.

Following the release of their 2020 EP Thoughts Lights Colors Sounds, produced by Andrew Maury (Shawn Mendes, Lizzo, COIN), the band embarked on a pandemic-induced “virtual tour,” live-streaming their energetic performances to more than 20 million viewers and building a worldwide community of fans. The band signed with indie label Th3rd Brain in early 2022, announcing a string of US tour dates in support of forthcoming new music.

Matthew Prodanovich

Artist PhotoMatthew Prodanovich, 30, started his music career by picking up a classical guitar when he was 12. He quickly found writing songs to be something he was truly passionate about. Matthew formed a band with his childhood friends who were also learning classical guitar at the same time as him. The band would eventually become Sub-Radio. During college Matthew honed his songwriting skills with an Individualized Study degree with a concentration in Music Industry from James Madison University. He also studied classical guitar for three years while attending the university. The diversity of music that he was exposed to while at school allowed him to expand his songwriting abilities. During Matthew’s time at college, Sub-Radio quickly turned into a local band playing mostly local venues to a touring act that has now performed hundreds of shows across the country. Matthew now lives outside of Washington, D.C. and continues to write and perform with Sub-Radio.

John Fengya

Artist PhotoJohn Fengya, 29, is the keyboardist, backing guitarist, and backing vocalist for Sub-Radio. He began his musical career at age 8 learning the piano. At age 11 he spent a year learning the alto saxophone in his middle school band. Soon after, at age 12, he enrolled in his school’s guitar program where he and Sub- Radio guitarist Matthew Prodanovich first crossed musical paths. The two often sought each other out to perform and compose together; in the years following, this partnership would eventually blossom to include fellow classmates and musicians, forming the basis of Sub-Radio as it is known today.

In his high school years, Fengya continued private piano instruction and performance in addition to his enrollment in public school guitar. He accrued multiple honors and accolades including the 2010 Certificate of Merit awarded by the National Society of Arts and Letters. Fengya also cofounded his school’s extracurricular guitar club. Focused on student-led collaboration and performance, the club served as a forum for students and instructors to host musical clinics and study sessions. Additionally, Fengya served as a two-year member of his school’s premiere guitar quartet, three-year attendee of the PAVAN Summer Regional Governor’s School for the Arts, and four-year member of the Loudoun County Youth Guitar Orchestra.

In 2015, Fengya earned a B.S. from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He has since been performing and touring with Sub-Radio and has spent time supplementing his musical career by working as an IT professional.

Kyle would go on to pursue a Bachelor’s of Music at James Madison University. It was at JMU that Kyle met the original lineup of Sub-Radio, though he would not join the band for a few years. He graduated in 2016 with a concentration in Music Industry, which he put to use finding work in live event production, sound reinforcement, and studio recording before joining Sub-Radio in early 2019.
