Biography
When researching the American Music Abroad Program (AMA), it reminded me of my own vision statement, “To build on the spirit of community through musical experiences with others as we learn, collaborate, grow, and bring inspiration to others through music. To make a positive impact through my music.”
Many times, today when we are on tour, we ask if there are community outreach programs while we are visiting different cities. Being able to visit with students or communities gives us a deeper sense of connection with our audiences. For those events where we cannot do community outreach, we also do meet and greets. Again, this is to meet as many people as we can and share on a more personal level.
As a blind African American musician, there’s a natural curiosity about my accomplishments and how I was able to achieve my career and educational goals despite being blind. The best way to explain it to people is by showing them in the way I carry myself and my outlook on life.
Many times, people are inspired by my story and how I can be a blind band leader in a sighted band.
All the members of the band have been involved in workshops and a couple have taught music at the elementary level.
