Biography
The spotlight on Nashville with its musical values and timeless traditions is currently bright. No band embodies what’s right about 21st century Nashville more completele than the quintet known as Humming House. Cobbled together from diverse backgrounds, their playground of musical exploration is irresistible. It’s the way they weave together threads of Music City’s folk, rock, soul, and bluegrass legacies. It’s in the inspirational and revealing songwriting. It’s in their acoustic instrumentation, presenting mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and upright bass in fresh roles. It’s in the pleasant tension between rousing energy and nuanced arrangements. And it’s in the voices, with two complimentary stylists up front and backed by the full band’s rapturous harmonies. To date Humming House has released two albums of collaborations with Grammy Award-winning producers Vance Powell (The White Stripes, Chris Stapleton, Buddy Guy) and Mitch Dane (Jars of Clay). The band has recently completed their third studio album with a release set for the spring of 2017.
With over 500 shows under their belt in 5 years, Humming House is emphatically a live band. They’ve played rooms of all sizes and performed at Forecastle Festival, Musikfest, the Cayamo Cruise, the Rock boat, and NPR’s Mountain Stage. They’ve toured with nationally renown acts like Kacey Musgraves, St. Paul and The Broken Bones, Drew Holcomb, and Eric Hutchinson. In addition to their live shows, Humming House’s music has been praised by media outlets that include The Today Show, NPR’s All Things Considered, World Café Next, No Depression, American Songwriter Magazine, Relix, and Pop Matters. The band’s songs have been heard on network TV shows that include FX’s Justified, The CW’s Hart of Dixie, MTV’s World of Jinx, and a T-Mobile advertising campaign.
If the new Nashville means anything, it’s about musicianship and authenticity. Quite often that results in sounds that are fascinating and appealing to critics and fellow musicians. Occasionally, artistry emerges that’s both profound and widely appealing. And when it does, as with Humming House, it’s cause for revelry.
